Camarines Norte: Calaguas, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn

Calaguas Island sheds a new kind of light from the moment the sun touches the horizon as it bids the day goodbye until it peeps from the east greeting everybody another pleasant morning. The darkness reveals a different kind allure, sometimes, the naked eye won’t easily see. In this post and through these set of photos, I would like to share how I was captivated by the enchanting beauty of Calaguas, from dusk ’til dawn.

Rocky shores marked both ends of Mahabang Buhangin‘s kilometer stretch of powdery white sand. These  rock formations pose a perfect subject for long exposure landscape images complemented by a magnificent sunset on the backdrop. Water, shot in long light exposures, stirs a feeling of motion to the photograph rather than just a static image.

For me, the true spectacle of Calaguas Island is unveiled when the vivid blue sky turned pitch black. Tiny white holes pierce into the night sky, one by one, flickering, shimmering, and glittering, until they became countless entities, like a unified army committed to a single purpose – enthrall their spectators. A majestic manifestation of Mother Nature’s artistry and brilliance. This is the luxury not even the richest man on the planet can afford. Fortunately, this could be enjoyed by everyone, have’s or have-not’s alike.

Sunrise promises an equally stunning sight to behold just like sunsets. Sleepy heads would come to their senses upon witnessing the enchantment of first light. A vibrant festival of hues emerge from  beyond the grasslands and rolling hills, painting a beautiful day to come. A beautiful day in paradise. Sigh, and say, “Good morning, Calaguas.”

Aside from image capturing, the camera taught me to see the world in a different light. It taught me to see the beauty beyond what can be seen by the naked eye. It taught me that there is beauty in everything around us, even in pitch black darkness. In this modern world where everything is on high gear, we easily take things for granted that we miss how beautiful this planet is amidst our daily struggles in life. Sometimes, I think we have to pause for a minute, look around and just appreciate what’s there, what we have, then we sigh and say, “What a lovely planet we have.”

  1. Jed, thank you for the reminder that there are privileges we just need to take hold of in order to witness God’s provision of beauty and life. most times we take these moments for granted when we don’t have to pay a steep price to experience it … in this case, your sharing with us your chances with God’s creation even gave us a free insight and glimpse of a heart warming moment … thank you, again, Jed …

i probably need to plan another island trip soon for the family — April

    • Hello April,

Together let us celebrate how beautiful this world is and be thankful we are blessed to see these wonders.

I think you should make a family getaway on an island. Great idea. =)

      Enjoy your trip. =)

    • Hello Red,

Nagva-vary yung settings depending on the amount of light. Pero just to give you an idea, nagsa-start ako sa f/11 – f/22 tapos from 20 seconds to 30 seconds. ISO 100 lang to avoid the grains. Malakas mag-grains pag-long exposure.

sa ganong settings ka na lang mag-adjust. Trial and error lang. Out of 20-30 shots, piliin mo na lang yung best shot mo. Ganon ako madalas.

      Thanks, Red. =)

  2. Amazing Photography! Amazing! Amazing! =) there are other synonyms and powerful words I know hehe, just couldn’t stop saying “amazing!”
